As daylight hours increase and the sun begins to shine we tend to spend more time outdoors. The following are some common concerns that can dampen our summer spirit. When treated naturopathically, these concerns can be quickly curtailed and we can continue hiking, barbequing, gardening and generally enjoying the warm weather.
Insect Bites
- Apply drops of lavender oil to the bite
- Apply mud compress to draw out toxins
- Apply juice from the aloe vera plant, some fresh basil or fresh sliced onions to decrease itching.
- Homeopathically, take Ledum 30C, which can be used prophylactically.
Wasp and Bee Stings
- Try to remove the stinger before all the venom has been released
- Apply a baking soda and water paste to the area, and then apply either tea tree or lavender oil.
- Homeopathically, take Apis 30C. Often one dose will help the swelling quickly dissipate.

Bumps and Bruises
- Take Arnica 30C for most bruises or traumatic injuries.
- Apply Arnica cream to the area if the skin is NOT broken.
- Try Ruta 30C for bruising of the bone when the bone is not close to the surface (e.g. shin, cheekbone).
Minor Burns
- Submerge the area in cold water and keep submerged until heat is drawn out so that no blister forms.
- Apply a mixture of Calendula, Lavender and Almond oil to help healing.
- Alternatively, fresh ginger root juice soaked in cotton or cloth helps heal burns.
Scrapes and Cuts
- Clean immediately with hydrogen peroxide or soak in hot, soapy water.
- Put pressure on wound and elevate.
- Cayenne sprinkled liberally on cut will stop bleeding. Be careful not to get it in your eyes.
- You can use tea tree oil as an antiseptic.
- Make sure wound is clean and then apply Calendula or Comfrey ointment to speed up healing without scarring.
- Homeopathically, try Phosphorous 30C
Common sense, awareness of the following and keeping a few homeopathic remedies on hand can minimize angst and maximize fun.
