Are your sneakers shoved to the back of your cupboard, never to see the light of day until the next fashion revival when sneakers can be paired again with skirts? Are your dumbbells used as paperweight for your burgeoning old newspaper pile? Has your treadmill seen more of the dust than the soles of your shoes? Even people who have a consistent work-out routine sometimes fall out of the habit from time to time. Here's the top 5 tips for renewing your motivation and jump-starting your exercise plan.

Whoever said resolutions are only for that time of the year when you're probably too partied out to care about adhering to goals made under the influence? Just like New Year, each beginning of the month may be used as a time to reflect and assess where you are in your exercise plan. Make new and better resolutions or stick to older ones until you have at least given it a go in the new month. You will find that you are constantly reminded of your goals and after a while, tire of the same excuses you've been giving yourself to not exercise.

Another use for the good old calender would be to note sporting events like the Borneo International Marathon or Sutera Harbour Sunset Run and sign up for them. Pick a category that is slightly above your comfort zone and take the plunge. And why not make it more worthwhile by joining to raise money for charities or causes that you believe in? It is certainly a worthy goal to commit to.

.

That's right, buy something. Some people are motivated by new clothes so if you are one of them, why not use that to your advantage? Set yourself a realistic budget and get a new workout outfit or shoes, place them where you can see them, and get motivated to take them out for a spin. Or simply get yourself the newest exercise video by someone you admire, or
that new pumping music to get you going.

.

If you find it hard to be motivated, find that friend who is just that bit more inspired than you are and tag along with him/her to the gym/court/studio/field. It is always easier to find excuses not to work out when there is no one to rebut them, so get your friend to give you some encouraging words or a push. As for couples, it's been said that 'couples who exercise together, stay together'. Whether it be a result of pheromones and adrenalin, it's always worth a try!

.

Always try something new with your routine so you stay committed and motivated for longer! Gyms often offer packages that include unlimited number of classes and in different forms of exercise. If you have yet to find your true gym calling, try a few and track the changes that you feel with each one; whether it makes you energetic or lethargic, refreshed or tired, and pick the one/ones you feel best to stick with.

.

If your time is often taken up by work, friends, school or family obligations, use a consistent workout routine as part of your plan to regain some well-earned quality time for yourself. Section a little time out of your daily schedule where you can switch your phone off, work up a really good sweat and devote that time completely to YOU.
