Shanghai Tang Imperial Tailoring

Shanghai Tang is dedicated to fostering the fine art of traditional Shanghainese tailoring.

Employing eight traditional tailors whose fathers were an integral part of the Chinese cultural clothing revolution, together, these Sifu’s created what we know today as the Qi Pao or Cheong Sam.

Moving from China to Hong Kong, these tailors revolutionized the Chinese wardrobe and reinvented traditional Chinese clothing by evolving the Qi Pao into a short, form-fitting garment that worships the curves of the female form. This traditional craft and the detailed techniques they employ were passed down from fathers to sons who now practice the same techniques to create the Shanghai Tang Imperial Tailoring Qi Pao today.

The Shanghai Tang Qi Pao is a unique mix of antique Shanghainese craftsmanship and traditional Chinese gowns, combined with modern European fabrics and innovative new silhouettes. The Shanghai Tang Imperial Tailoring woman truly represents the most luxurious image of modern China.

Respectfully blending old and new, this results in a contemporary yet classic gown that is steeped in tradition and history.
Borrowing elements from old Shanghai the silhouette combines the high 3 inch mandarin collar, reminiscent of the seductive jazz singers and late night consorts of the 1930's. Tiny pinched waists, bare backs, soft flowing fishtails, scalloped lace edging and light reflecting crystals – these all define and embody the romance of the Shanghai Tang mystique.

Intricate and traditional Chinese design elements are used to enhance the details with handmade flower buttons, hand-sewn satin piping, silk knot fastenings and carved semi-precious stones such as onyx and jade. Beaded lace, fine printed silk chiffon, bold floral cut velvets, and hand embroidered silks are all available to the Shanghai Tang client.

Shanghai Tang also offers the complete wardrobe for the discerning gentleman who has cast aside the necktie and has embraced Chinese elegance. Their Made-to-Measure men’s collection, using the finest Italian superfine wools, European cottons and silk velvets, takes its wearer from a casual afternoon polo match to a black tie ball to in complete Shanghai Tang mandarin collared style.

Imperial Tailoring is offered at Shanghai Tang’s Flagship boutiques in Hong Kong, London, New York and Singapore. They offer a one-on-one couture style consultation that involves choosing fabrications and linings, taking body measurements and, most importantly, creating new designs based on clients’ needs.
