Like many in Kota Kinabalu, you’ve probably heard the name of KK’s newest F&B outlet crop up in conversation, more so if you hang out with Team Lifeandstyle.
WHAT IS IT:
Located at KK Times Square, Firefly is the new kid on the block with an interesting touch. Literally spilt down the middle with appropriate interior concepts to match, one half is the dining section while the other sports a bar.
WHY WE LIKE FIREFLY:
There are several massive differences that set Firefly apart from its other counterparts and competitors –
Firefly is only one of two bars in Malaysia serving famous Belgian exports on draft; namely witbieren (white beer) Hoegaarden and premium brun (brown) ale Leffe. Hoegaarden can be enjoyed in 2 sizes: the 250ml glass or the 500ml glass. It should be no surprise which size we veered towards.
The Leffe Brun on the other hand, is served in a chalice which highlights the flavours of this particular ale. Firefly also carries a wide range of other beers, spirits and wines.
Happy Hour prices for abovementioned beverages are extremely reasonable and easy on the pocket. At RM12 for a fully imported draft European beer on tap, it is no wonder that Firefly is gaining popularity with the after work crowd.
The food menu offers normal pub grub favourites with some interesting twists – pork belly, scallops wrapped in bacon (yes, pork bacon) and pork ribs. Yes, this is strictly a non-halal outlet. There is also an oyster menu for those looking to try out something a little different.
At 9pm the bar area takes on a more club-like feel with the presence of an energetic young band.
Should the music get a little too loud, Firefly has ample outdoor seating by the water fountain. We found the bubbling sound of running water to be quite therapeutic, actually.
The crowd is pretty diverse and not what one would usually expect. Disgruntled golfers from the neighbouring golf club arguing over their scorecards, to the office crowd looking to escape traffic, a lost tourist or two and families dropping by for a meal, Firefly’s patrons are an interesting lot to observe, to be sure.
Parking in the area and accessibility is a breeze.

As stated, the rest of the menu is pretty normal fare with the exception of the oyster section which is uncommon here.
On expansiveness I'd say yep there's a pretty decent variety as per any normal grill about town, just depends on your own personal taste and what you prefer.
A main will set you back between 25-35 ringgit while the pork belly snack and the calamari were around RM10.
